What is Mat based Pilates?

Pilates aims to strengthen the body in an even way, with particular emphasis on core strength to improve general fitness and wellbeing. Pilates exercises are done on a mat and occasionally some pieces of equipment are used to further challenge stability and flexibility. There are over 20 different Pilates exercises with at least three harder levels for each exercise.

In Rick’s classes there is a large emphasis on improving flexibility through all the joints, but with improved flexibility it is vital that there is also improvement in stability.

Pilates was developed by German born Joseph Pilates, who believed mental and physical health, are closely connected. His method was influenced by western forms of exercise, including gymnastics, boxing and Greco roman wrestling. Joseph Pilates emigrated to the US in 1920’s and opened a studio in New York where he taught his method.
